Charlotte Journalism: Motels Zine

Commissioned by the Charlotte Journalism Collaborative, this zine adapts a WFAE story by Marshall Terry on the conversion of Charlotte motels into micro-housing. The project translates local reporting into an 8-page visual narrative.

You can view the zine on the Charlotte Journalism Collaborative’s website.

DELIVERABLES
Illustrated Zine

THE IDEA

Turning long-form reporting into a tight visual narrative, using subtle distortion in color, line, and type to reflect the story's unresolved tension.

The zine explores a creative, though imperfect, housing solution. Renovating motels raises questions about displacing longtime residents and contributing to gentrification, but it also aims to expand the conversation around how Charlotte can create more affordable housing.

Illustration Process

I began illustrating all the spreads with ink on paper and then scanned them to create the final artwork digitally.

Zine Assembly

I set to work with a paper trimmer and some double-sided tape to assemble a fresh batch of zines.

Zines in Print

Results

The Charlotte Journalism Collaborative distributed the finished zines at the 2024 BOOM Charlotte Arts Festival in Camp North End, sharing the project’s story with a broad audience of local arts supporters and community members.

The work doesn’t stop here.
